Day 89 - Saturday, June 30th 2018: Leagun to Clifden 22 km / Total 1839 km, 22°C, sunny
Cool. The weather got cooler. Only 22°C, which is still hot for walking and makes the road melt.
As I walked along a tiny bay, the more I went into the bay, the less windy it was. 6 km to the East. I then walked the south side of the bay, taking the Sky Road Loop. 7 km to the West.
Suddenly, the road turned and started to climb. It is named "the Sky Road" because when the first tourists visited the area in the XIXth century, they asked where the road was leading to, and the local people just answered, "to the Sky". Well, as the sky is the limit, when I reached it, at the top of the hill was a bench, almost waiting for me. I dropped my big bag, and sat there, looking around. Clouds and mist were climbing too from the sea. I needed to rest and closed my eyes.
I woke up forty minutes later. The sun was back and my skin was burning (apparently it wasn't tanned enough, because now that I have a watch, I got its mark). The view was amazing with the sun: perfect blue sky, perfect blue sea, and so many little islands. There were people around me trying to name them. I only recognized O'mey Island and its big beach. Apparently, the actor Peter O'Toole has been buried on one of these islands.
As I was going left, I discovered a food truck on the other side of the parking. I was really hungry so I asked for a hotdog. While the man was cooking it, we talked about the weather. He told me last year there was no summer at all, not a single beautiful day in June, July, August nor September. Oh ok, so I understand now, this year they get double summer! He gave me water for free and advised me to go to the ruins of Clifden Castle.
I walked down the Sky Road to Clifden on the Northside of Clifden Bay. 7 km to the East. The view was nice. I saw the castle but didn't go to visit it.
Clifden is quite a big town, and pretty. It seems to be very lovely. Unfortunately, the hostel was full (heatwave + weekend + summer holidays), so I walked the 2 km to the North and reached the campsite. A very quiet campsite. The only thing I heard at night was the sound of the wind in the trees.
