Day 50 - Saturday, May 11th 2018: Carrick to Dunkineely 26 km / Total 1105 km, 18°C, sunny
Traveling in Ireland is not only geographical, but it's also time travelling. As I describe how peaceful and safe life is here, without any "Vigipirate", crime, insecurity, my mother told me it reminded her of the life she used to know in the 1970s. Of course, Ireland is a modern country, you can find modern technology everywhere, but it kept its tradition and slow way of life. Here stress doesn't exist, or at least you don't feel it. You just live, peacefully. You take time, you have time. And I feel lucky every day that I took time to do such a thing, it's a chance I gave to myself. I forget yesterday, and don't think about tomorrow. It's just today, enjoying the landscape, and each step, one after the other.
So even if it was a long day of walk I took my time, there's no hurry. Even if sometimes it's longer I follow the Wild Atlantic Way and the Coastline. And I never regret it, because the view was great in Muckross Head, with long white waves seen from above.
After a delicious sandwich in a coffee shop in Killybegs, I took a little path only indicated by Google. I don't think it's an official road, it's more a "cow path", with mud and water, I had to help myself with my hiking pools to avoid falling in it.
On Google, a hostel was indicated in Dunkineely, but from the street, it looked closed. In fact the entrance was in the back, door open, but no one there. I crossed the street and went to the pub on the other side, to ask where I could find the manager. They just told me to wait, he would be there by 8 pm, and if not I could just choose a bed upstairs. So I waited. A guy, apparently living here advised me to call the owner who arrived 5min later. He showed me all his rooms and told me to choose the one I wanted. We talked a little bit, he told me he just came back from Japan, and we talked about rugby, as my local team Racing 92 just loose against Munster, and I told him our star Dan Carter was moving to Japan. And I don't know why, but he decided to give me back 1/3 of the price I paid for the bed. That was very kind. He said it was for a hot coffee on the road. Sure it'll be !
