Day 40 - Tuesday, May 1st 2018: Portsalon to Fanad Head 23 km / Total 878 km, 9°C, rainy
After a windy night, there was some soft rain un the morning. So I packed my tent wet, and crossed the golf course again. I made a stop at the pub to eat a scone and drink a hot cup of tea close to the fire place.
I think I spent most of the day lost in my mind. With soft rain and mist, I could hardly see the landscape around and enjoyed it. Until I reached Fanad Head it was almost alright as I got the wind in my back. So I just walked, following the road. Everything was closed, no car, nobody outside. I felt like I wasn't even there. Totally lost in my mind. I escaped the reality (or just the weather). Thinking of my future, planning trips, imagining my future house, telling me stories or speaking in my head to people who are not there (don't worry it's not new, I'm very used to these "in my mind conversation").
At Fanad Head, things started to get worst regarding the weather. There was no more hills to protect me against the rain and the wind got stronger. I really expected to see Fanad Head lighthouse, but I didn't expected to see it with such a bad weather. The visitor center was not opened (so was the access to the toilet. After drinking tea, it was not great, so I'm sorry, I peed outside like ... a sheep, anyway there was no one around). I found a place not too wet and just sat there to rest, thinking the day before it was April and sunny, and now it was May and rainy, and how it should be the opposite.
As it was not even a visit day, I just quickly took pictures, and turned back. As a consolation, even if it were opened, the view was too bad on that day. And even the local Tavern was closed.
So I walked straight ahead to my B&B which was, for once, not too expensive!
I think the manager and the two clients of the pub (the B&B is also a pub) might have hallucinated when they saw me getting inside, with my big bag and its yellow jacket, dressed with my rain cover. As always I explained why the hell I was walking under the rain carrying such a big bag. As often they thought I was crazy. But for once, one of the client said "Oh yes, I saw you walking outside Letterkenny 2 days ago".
I got a comfortable room and a hot dinner, which I really appreciated after such a walking day. The manager was really kind to me, and he made efforts to speak to me with no accent to be sure I understood him (because I didn't get a word when he spoke to his clients). But I shouldn't have taken an Irish coffee, because I couldn't sleep after that. Ironic as I had a bed!
