Day 33 - Monday, April 23rd 2018: Malin Head to Carndonagh 20 km / Total 723 km, 10°C, cloudy
I left my hostel early in the morning, as I had to be in Carndonagh before 3 pm. Little road with no one, except sheep, apparently hungry, because when they saw me, they tried to follow me, but sorry I had no food. I get down to Lagg where there are huge sand dunes. Just before arriving in Malin Town, a guy who was painting a public bench came to talk to me. He thought I was German, and when I said I was French, he asked if it was ok to talk to me and if I had time for that. That made me laugh because it's so typical of French people "sorry I have no time". We exchanged about some techniques to get warm when you're sleeping in a tent. Then I get to the shop to find a sandwich, but there was not, so an apple and some biscuits only for lunch I ate on a public bench just outside the town bridge. While I was leaving, the man I was talking to before, found me again, because he was afraid of where I was going to spend the night, and felt concerned for me. It was very kind.
A couple of minutes later I arrived at Colette's house, my host for the night. She was taking her teenage daughter to a concert in Belfast, so she asked me to arrive early. And it was great, because, it meant I had the afternoon to rest, and she settled me in the cosy and comfortable living room with the fireplace. I didn't realise how important it was to take time for me and just rest, writing blog posts, and checking my photos. I also discover the Eir code. In fact, when I arrived in her street, I was surprised because the street had no name, and the houses had no number. How is the postman dealing with that? In fact, in Ireland, they instituted the Eir Code, every house has it. And you just have to put in Google map to find the place. Clever, and very easy. I like this country!
It was the 1st time I found myself alone in a house in Ireland, and it was a little bit strange at night, just to hear the wind, and nothing else. But I had a very good sleep, and Colette's been very kind to me, I had fresh vegetables for lunch, which I really needed cause I don't have the occasion to eat them very often, and she made me a wonderful Irish Breakfast in the morning. In my mind, if you have to choose between a hotel, hostel or AirBnB to stay in Ireland, choose AirBnB, it's the best way to meet really good Irish people.
