Day 32 - Sunday, April 22nd 2018: Culdaff to Malin Head 27 km / Total 703 km, 12°C, cloudy
I had a strange night, I was anxious because I booked a hostel on hostelwolrd.com and chose it because it was written "credit card accepted" and then received a mail from the manager saying I had to pay in cash. And I still haven't found any ATM. The unknown of every day: where am I going to sleep? am I going to have enough water? enough food? where am I going to find electricity for my phone? where to find cash?
I took a huge breakfast, full Irish with eggs, sausages, beacon, beans, mushroom, tomatoes, toasts, cereals, orange juice, tea, yoghurt, some fresh fruits and even a croissant. You can't imagine how much fuel it gave me for the day.
As I was leaving the hostel, I asked at the reception where I could find an ATM, and as the closest was in Carndonagh, where I was going on the day after, the lady told me she can debit my credit card and give me cash. Such a relief, she saved me. What a great solution.
So I left the hotel, under soft rain, but very zen. And in fact, the way was easy. Almost flat, and I crossed a land of heather, almost desert, looking like the Highlands of Scotland. As I was alone on the road (I only met 3 sheep crossing), I decided to take pictures and videos. And suddenly, a woman came out from her house behind me and asked if I wanted a nice cup of tea. So kind! I declined as the weather was dry for the moment, and I was walking well at a good pace, but sure, if it was raining I would have accepted. This country is amazing!
Just before Malin Well, it was possible to see both sides of the peninsula. As it was only 3:30 pm and I wasn't expected at the hostel before 5 pm, I decided to walk the loop to Malin Head, the most Northerly point of the Island. When I arrived there, it was so windy. And a surprise to discover that "Star Wars: the last Jedi" was filmed there! So East and North Point: checked! I won't reach West point until the summer, but, now it's West Side of the country, and I just have to get South.
Then I went to my hostel, Sandrocks, which I really recommend. Welcomed by an old couple, the man gave me touristic explanations about Malin Head, and the lady made me a nice cup of tea. The view from the hostel, above the bay, and Inishowen Peninsula is really beautiful, and the sunset above the blue sea, with rain in background above the mountains was outstanding! And it's warm and very cosy place, I felt very well there, and had a great sleep. If you go there in winter and if you're lucky, you can see the northern lights, aurora!
