Day 159: Sunday, September 16th 2018: Fethard to Wellington Bridge 14 km / Total 3271 km, 19°C, sunny
B&B means Irish Breakfast. After six months of the walk, it's still the best way to start the day.
I love walking on Sunday, because it's always quieter on the road (most of the time), especially in the morning, when the only people I met are cyclists.
As I didn't plan to walk many kilometres, I decided to really take my time and enjoy the sunshine and quiet atmosphere. I had a look at Fethard's castle, mostly ruins, with no historical explanation.
One hour and a half later, I joined the old village of Saltmill, with its old stone bridge. I sat there on a bench, and just enjoyed the last sun rays of summer, with the peaceful river in front of me.
Then I took a little pedestrian path to Tintern Abbey, one of the few Cistercian abbeys of Ireland. It's a heritage site, managed by OPW (Office of Public Works) quite well preserved with its five storeys towers, and with a lot of explanations.
I especially enjoyed the fact that, at the tea room, they served roasted camembert! Six months without eating camembert! And it was absolutely delicious!
And what's better than taking a nap while the sun was heating me after that?
The rest of the walk was along a very quiet little road. I'll have to remember these incredible peaceful moments of walk with birds song when my trip will be over. It was definitely what I was looking for!
The campsite wasn't an official one, just someone who turned their land into a campsite (so not really flat but I managed to find a place flat enough), and very expensive compared to the regular campsite (the same price as a hostel during summer holidays). But there was an unlimited hot shower in a bungalow and the view was good, and the place was definitely quiet, so why not. And I had a beautiful sky at night with stars and a bright moon.
